Good news for iPhone enthusiasts who are also passionate about the great outdoors: it seems that the new iPhone 8 will feature some waterproof capabilities. iPhone assembler Wistron has confirmed that at least one of Apple’s next-generation iPhone models will be waterproof and include wireless charging capabilities.
In a statement after the company’s shareholders meeting, CEO Robert Hwang of Wistron told reporters: “Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit.”
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are already water-resistant, with an IP67 rating, but Apple does mention that “splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear.” Apple’s warranty does not cover water damage.
It’s expected that the new iPhone will comply with the IP67 standards. Even with Hwang’s statement, Apple has yet to confirm the information.
