I don’t know about you guys, but sleeping is one of my favorite activities. Every ninja needs to get their energy from somewhere and I get most of mine after a good rest. This is why the mattress is one of the most important items in my household and I’m pretty sure it’s one of the most important in yours as well. And this is also why I’ve dedicated this review to finding the best waterproof mattress protector on the market.

Why waterproof, you ask? If you ask me, almost everything in the world should be waterproof, but this review is not about me. As an adult, it is advisable that you get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night. A child should sleep even more. This means that you’re spending at least 6 hours each die lying on your mattress. Since your sleep is supposed to energize you, we generally come across loads of advice for a better nap time: don’t use electronic devices before going to bed, make sure the room is properly freshened, the bed sheets are clean and, of course, the mattress is its best possible shape. Finding the best waterproof mattress protector is important for many situations.

First of all, imagine how much you sweat during those hot summer nights (assuming you don’t sleep with the AC on, which is totally not recommended). Even if you use a regular mattress protector, chances are your mattress will still absorb some of your sweat. Imagine enjoying a snack late at night in bed and spilling water or soda as you try to take a sip. I won’t get into children wetting the bed, I assume you know this was coming.

As you can see, having a waterproof mattress protector is all about advantages, so why would you choose anything else? That being said, we’ve looked into some items to help you find the best waterproof mattress protector and here’s what we found.

Queen Size SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector

If you’ve done a bit of homework so far, you already know that SafeRest is quite the name in the field of mattress protectors. They advertise their products as being the best consumer choice for those who want to protect their mattress against everything some fluids to dust mites. Right from the start, they cover 5 important categories: children, pet owners, people with asthma, people with allergies and people with incontinence. All it takes is one spill to leave your mattress with a stain and potentially an unpleasant odor. So, SafeRest provides mattress protectors for more than your comfort, but also to protect your hygiene.

Dust mites is a factor that not a lot of people take into consideration… and they should. It is a phenomenon that millions of Americans have to deal with, especially since allergies are quite common. Some people consider SafeRest the best waterproof mattress protector because it doesn’t allow dust mites to pass through the protector and reach the mattress, where they generally defecate and multiply. Disgusting, I know.

Because it uses soft cotton, this is a hypoallergenic product. Even if it’s waterproof, the mattress protector won’t make any noise even if you toss and turn a lot during your sleep. The surface of this mattress protector is smooth and soft, so even if you generally have sensitive skin, you won’t get any rashes from it. SafeRest is a manufacturer that takes pride in its Invisa-Shield system, patented to bring the best experience for the customer. The surface of the protector was designed in such a way as not to interfere with the current feel of your mattress. Even better, it is designed to be compatible with any type of mattress, from latex to memory foam ones. Since it’s designed for people with allergies, this waterproof mattress protector is free of vinyl, PVC, phthalates or fire retardant chemical treatments. That makes it a non-toxic product for you, your children or your pets.

Even if washing the protector is simple, customers have said that it takes a long time to dry. This shouldn’t be a problem if you acquire 2 similar mattress protectors, so you will always have a clean one when the other one needs washing. Customers have also reported a high level of satisfaction as far as the waterproof function is concerned. The protector doesn’t allow any liquid to pass through and damage the mattress. No, not even coffee.

Utopia Bedding’s Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector

Ranging from twin to twin XL and up to California King, Utopia Bedding has a waterproof mattress protector ready for every kind of bed. Since you’re looking for the best waterproof mattress protector, we’ve chosen to write about the Utopia Bedding’s Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector for several reasons. First of all, it’s made of plush cotton terry fabric, which provides the anti-stain feature of the cover. Terry toweling is what makes this protector absorb liquid before they can reach your mattress and damage it. Even more, it can absorb your body’s moisture/humidity during your sleep, leaving your skin breathing and comfortable. In fact, when you’re on the market looking for the best waterproof mattress protector, you should always look for the ones that have terry tops.

The TPU backing (polyurethane membrane) is not only waterproof, but also breathable. This feature is what allows moisture and heat to break through, but also protects the mattress from stains and bacteria. The TPU backing is the one responsible with preventing the protector from making annoying plastic noises when you toss and turn during the night.

Since we only review the best waterproof products, one of the main reasons we included the Utopia Bedding protector in our reviews is it’s hypoallergenic feature. If you’re a person sensitive to allergies, your bed should be your safe refuge and this items makes sure you’re protected from such problems. Since we’ve already established that dust mites are a huge problem for millions of people, this specific mattress protector also makes sure that your skin cells stay out of the mattress. Why is this important? Because dust mites feed on human skin and the last thing you want is providing them with an environment suitable for living and reproduction.

Generally preferable for allergy sufferers, this mattress protector let you sleep comfortably at night without the worry of runny eyes or stuffy noses. Dust mites are microscopic creatures, invisible to eyes that majorly causes these allergies or asthma. They lay on the dark environment as mattress or pillows and feed on human skins and makes the situation worst. Our protector provides an impervious cover that keeps skin cells out of mattress to act as a barrier against allergens and dust mites.

Utopia Bedding has come up with the Smooth Grip Skirt System. This system was designed to fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep, because of its included elastic. This elastic was designed in such a way as to pull in the borders of the deep pocket, making sure that the protector will properly fit at the base of the mattress. Basically, it can be wrapped around the top side and sides of the mattress just like a fitted sheet. Not only does this provide extra protection on the sides, as well as the top, but it also prevents the protector from coming loose as you move during your sleep. This product is recommended for children that move a lot during the night, but also for the fussy sleepers.

You can wash the Utopia Bedding waterproof mattress protector in the washing machine, which means less effort for maintenance. It’s also recommended that you fully dry it before use. It’s important to use mild detergent and avoid bleach. This is really important, as bleach and other chemicals can damage the waterproof layer of the protector. Water should not be too hot when washing the protector, but rather cool to warm. The mattress protector needs to be unzipped and the waterproof backing should be facing in when washed.

LINENSPA Breathable Mattress Protector

Before moving on to the last review, there is something I have to mention. Every waterproof mattress protector that we mentioned in this article should be carefully chosen to match the size of your mattress. You may have noticed that we randomly suggest protector sizes, but only do so because there are the best-selling items in their category. If you choose a mattress protector from a specific manufacturer, make sure you select the size which is suitable to your needs. The specification are generally identical from one size to another, it’s just the dimensions that vary.

Linenspa has a slogan that I find to be a real seller: “We don’t judge people who eat in bed. We help them.” I appreciate how they’ve carefully targeted our love for late-night snacking or drinking coffee in bed early in the morning (ah yes, the perks of being a ninja wordsmith – you can drink coffee in bed and work at the same time). The Linenspa promises to deliver a great customer experience for everyone who is looking to protect their mattress while still doing some of their favorite activities without getting out of bed (I meant eating, of course).

When I was doing my homework and reading as much as I possibly can about this specific waterproof mattress protector, I came across a customer review that sounded like a script from some sort of home-made horror movie. If you feel you don’t need a waterproof mattress protector, I’m going to leave you with what Sheri F. had to say about her experience with bed bugs (you can read the full review here):

“This is the first time that my child has brought home bed bugs while going to the parks in Orlando. Those pests had 2 months to reproduce before we figured out what was causing the marks on my daughter. […]

The first time I did her room, I just partially dismantled her bed and the first night, she saw more bed bugs. When I took apart her bed the 2nd time (this time everything was dismantled including the feet and all screws), I shockingly found most of the bugs and eggs in the wooden planks, crevices and screws beneath the box spring. I especially saw a ton of unhatched eggs when I took apart the feet to the wooden planks (in those spaces).”

This ninja is not easily disgusted by a lot of things, but this review made me cringe. So, ladies and gentlemen, if that doesn’t convince you of the importance of owning a waterproof mattress protector to keep bed bugs away, nothing will. Oh, did I mention Sheri bought the Linenspa mattress protector and she is totally satisfied with it?

The Linenspa is more than just a protective mattress sheet: it is a mattress encasement. This means that thanks to its included zipper, the covers provided protection at a 360 degrees level, making sure the mattress is fully covered, even on the bottom side. Needless to say, this provides full protection against bed bugs.

Even if this waterproof mattress protector is comfortable, it is recommended that you add an additional bed sheet over it when you sleep, as some customers feel it was a bit rough on their skin. Even so, this protector does not hold smells, even if you spill different liquids on it.

Verdict

Another tough decision to make, especially since I only review the best products in the first place. So, which one of the 3 waterproof mattress protectors shall it be? While they all have similar features and provide protection against liquid and unwanted bed intruders, the SafeRest is considered to be the best waterproof mattress protector. It’s made from the best materials, it has been tested in several conditions, it’s hypoallergenic, easy to clean and the best-selling item in its category. But hey, that doesn’t mean the others don’t deserve a fair chance!

I'm Jenny. I moved to rainy Ireland several years ago and I had to learn how to be prepared for the constant spring/fall that is the weather on the Emerald Isle. If you're always cold, always miserable because of the rain, maybe it's not the weather at fault (all the time 😀 ). A wise man once told me that there's no bad weather, just bad clothes. So I acted accordingly 🙂
