Adventure goers often turn to backpacks when it comes to storing the things that they wish to bring along on their trips and activities.
Backpacks are a whole lot easier to carry; they stay safely attached to the body, while giving you ample room to move your arms around, and are usually more comfortable than most bag types since the back is able to bear more weight than the shoulder or other parts of the body.
That is why canyoneering enthusiasts, hikers, climbers, kayakers, boaters, campers, and other outdoor sports enthusiasts turn to these handy bags to take their valuables and much-needed supplies with them when they are out adventuring.
However, there is one specification that appeals to most outdoor sports people when it comes to backpacks, aside from quality and practicality, and that is its waterproof properties.
Waterproof packs are prized because not only do they allow you freedom of movement and taking your supplies along, they also allow you to keep these supplies safe and dry, especially if you are carrying electronic gadgets, such as phones, tablets, and cameras, that can be damaged by water.
If you own a backpack for outdoor activities but it is not waterproof, or you are not sure that it is, the following are a few steps that you can take to keep your belongings safe from moisture while you are out and about.
These are like raincoats for bags. You usually put them on your non-waterproof backpack to shield it from rain. What is good about pack covers is that you can take them off if you are out on a sunny day and just fold them and tuck them away in your backpack pocket.
However, they can be quite annoying if you have to access something in your bag every now and then while you are in the middle of something strenuous, like hiking or climbing, because they get in the way. Pack covers are ideal for occasional use and for activities that will not require you to reach into your bag occasionally.
Another thing with pack covers is that although they make your bag water resistant, they do not waterproof them; although it will be perfect for rains, it will not help if your bag goes overboard and falls into a river or any body of water.
Just as its name implies, pack liners are made to line your backpack, usually from the inside, to keep the things inside sealed and safe from water. Your backpack itself may get wet, but because it is lined with this waterproof material from the inside, the contents within remain dry and clean.
Usually, they come in different sizes so as to fit different sizes of bags. To use a liner, all you have to do is to put the liner inside your backpack, then fill it with the contents that you want to waterproof.
Usually, you seal the liner by twisting the top and fastening it with rubber bands, or sometimes, the liners come with special sealing features to make it easier. If you are trying to save up and do not want to buy a pack of liners for just a one-time use, you can opt for a heavy-duty trash bag instead.
They are a lot cheaper, and they can function pretty much the same way as a normal liner would. Just make sure that the waterproofing bag inside is a lot taller than the actual bag so that you will be able to seal it properly.
These little sacks usually come in different sizes and are meant to fit individual items that you wish to waterproof. For example, if you only want to keep your phone safe, all you need is one stuff sack to seal it in and keep it safe.
Alternately, if there are different things that you want to keep safe, as well as organized, you can do so too. You can keep dry clothes and towels in one bag, gadgets in another, and food in yet another.
That way, if you are opening your bag in the middle of a storm to reach one item, the rest of the items will not get wet because they are enclosed in a different stuff sack.
Zipper lock plastic bags
These bags are a practical and cost-efficient way of sealing your items and keeping them dry through bad weather. Just like stuff sacks, they come in different sizes and are handy in holding items such as papers, maps, and cash.
